Taking place every year on November 15th, this national initiative offers an important reminder that recycling is critical for our planet. But what exactly is America Recycles Day, also known as National Recycling Day, and how can we all get involved? Let's find out!

 

What is America Recycles Day?

America Recycles Day is a reminder of the importance of recycling and taking action to reduce our environmental impact. A Keep America Beautiful initiative, this day encourages individuals and communities across the United States to recognize the importance of recycling and to make a difference by embracing both recycling and sustainable living practices.

This day first began in 1994 after 2 employees of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality came up with the idea and took it to the National Recycling Coalition. 40 states took part in the first official America Recycles Day.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the rate of recycling has increased from less than 7% in 1960 to 32% today.

Clearly, we've come a long way. But there's still a very long way to go.
